Escaping Domestic Abuse and Eviction Prevention

Escaping Domestic Abuse and Eviction Prevention

Two Cases with The Independence Fund

Escaping Domestic Abuse

Pam H. is a post-9/11, combat veteran who deployed twice to Iraq and who is rated 100% disabled by the VA (including PTSD and TBI). The veteran and her children left their home in Kentucky due to domestic violence (her child was being abused) and have been staying with a relative in North Carolina while she looked for a job and apartment. She has located a rental and can afford the rent and bills but needs assistance with the deposits ($2000). The veteran had also found a part-time job but had to put it on hold because her childcare fell through. She is on a list for childcare assistance, but that won’t start until mid-June – and the employer is only holding the position until June 1st. The childcare expense to cover her until the assistance comes through is approx. $1000. Her total financial need is $3000 to cover both the deposit and the childcare, but the rental deposit is the primary concern.

Eating Disorder…Eviction Prevention

Carol T. is a veteran with a service-connected disability rating of 100%. She is a single mother and fell behind on rent after spending three months with her teen daughter who was receiving treatment at an eating disorder clinic in North Carolina. The veteran used her funds to cover hotel and living expenses while she was with her daughter and is now in need of one month’s rent ($1500) to avoid eviction.
