Little Sarah. Two heart surgeries, 2007 and again in 2010
Sara is a special baby who touched our lives not once but twice. Originally, She was found by CPT Brian Freeman USAR Civil Affairs (KIA 1/27/2007). Sara came to Children’s Hospital at Montefiore in Bronx NY in August 2007 for her operation. She was a single ventricle heart case. She was sponsored by Gift of Life New York and also stayed with CINI (Children in Need International) folks in Jordan. She stayed at the Ronald McDonald House in New Hyde Park on Long Island where Tom Deierlein was able to go and meet her and her family. She was the first TDF patient we actually got to meet.
After two years, at 5 years old she came back into the lives of folks here at TDF as she conducted her follow up surgery as part of the Heart Mission in February 2010.
Sara was excited to be the first child to receive surgery on the mission. Within three hours after her surgery, she was very talkative, and eagerly teaching us how to play with her new toys. Sara acted as the “mother” for the children. Medical staff would call Sara to comfort the kids who became scared before a checkup. Sara was cheerful, talkative, and fun to be around. She loved to make friends.
